Civil War (1529)
During 1527-1532, the two brothers fought over the Inca Empire. They both ruled different parts of the Empire. Huáscar ruled in Cuzco and Atahualpa ruled in Quito. As their father Huayna Capac died in 1527, they went to war over who would succeed their father. One thing the two weren’t aware of that there was a greater threat to them by the Spanish conquistadors. Later on after they both had power and control over the two territories, Huascar decided to send troops to capture Atahualpa as a prisoner while he was attending a festival. However, Atahualpa escaped and fled back to Quito. After returning he formed his army of atleast thirty thousand soldiers, and while Atahualpa prepared for the war, Huascar also managed to come up with his army with a same number of soldiers even though his soldiers were less experienced. Atahualpa send his forces to the other side and won a series of victories which led him closer to the gates of Cuzco. Later on during one of his attacks Atahualpa army captured Huascar and the news about the victory was sent to Atahualpa at the same day when Pizarro descended from the Andes to the town of Cajamarca. This event was really important because it weakened the empire and more importantly distracted the empire immediately prior to its struggle with the Spanish and the diseases. It created a great conflict inside the empire between the two sons. Not only this was a problem which led to the struggle of the empire but later on the conquest by the Spanish which was a bigger threat to the Inca Empire.
Capture of Atahualpa (1531-1532) ("Capture of atahualpa," )
On Pizarro's third visit to Peru the Spaniards capture the emperor, Atahualpa. Atahualpa defeats his brother to be emperor of Cuzco and have the throne. Atahualpa tried to meet with Pizarro but Pizarro sent Hernando de Soto in his place to talk with Atahualpa, which made him angry, he demanded that the Spanish apologizes and leaves. Then the Incans plan to have war with the Spanish but it goes wrong and the Spanish unleash gunfire which was a massacre killing nearly 2000 Incans. Atahualpa was captured but after that the Spanish didn’t know what to do with him, Pizarro and Soto didn’t want to kill him but the other Spaniards did, they came to an understanding either Atahualpa could be burned at the stake or he could get baptised to be Christian. He then died afterward on the day of August 29th 1533 and was buried in Christian rites of a church but his body was taken probably at final request of him before death, which left the Incan people without a leader.
